Statue of Attila

Vác, Danube bank

In the grassy area below Vác Castle you can see the equestrian statue of King Attila, which is unique in Hungary.

The history of the statue is really interesting, because the statue of Attila the Horseman was originally sculpted by Károly Cser in 1930, but at the time it was considered dangerous, and after World War II the statue was smashed, and unfortunately its pieces were left to gather dust. Gábor Mihály, a Kossuth and Munkácsy Prize-winning sculptor, was commissioned to recreate the statue, which was erected in 2020 on the grassy area between the former castle and the Danube. This is not the only work of Károly Cser in Vác, he also designed the World War I memorial on the main square. Both are important works of art in our city..

The surroundings of the statue are also worth mentioning. The long stretch of beach invites you for a pleasant walk. The recently opened boathouse in the neighbourhood offers a variety of active leisure activities. From spring to autumn, the terrace offers a cosy café with occasional live music. There is an excellent playground nearby, so it is a great place for a romantic stroll, a family outing or even a walk for your favourite four-legged friend.
