St Michael's Old Church Exhibition Hall
Walking around the main square of Vác, you will immediately notice the mysterious glass-roofed exhibition space and the paving around it, which follows a specific shape and resembles a memorial, located right in the middle of the square. Here once stood the church of St Michael, built for the German population after the Tartar invasion of 1241.
For a century after the Turkish era, this church was the Cathedral of Vaci. The stones of the square mark its location, as well as the walls of the churchyard around it. Over time, St Michael's Church was damaged, enlarged and rebuilt, but after the fire of 1731 it could not be restored. It was then demolished and most of its stones were used to build the new cathedral, which can still be seen today.
The location of the church became visible during the reconstruction of the main square in 2006. Today, a special archaeological exhibition preserves the centuries-old relics in the glass-roofed chancel of the former St. Michael's Church.
The archaeological excavations have unearthed valuable artefacts, which you can see in the exhibition space. Tickets can be bought at the ticket office of the Ignác Tragor Museum opposite.
