The Naszály Mountain

How did the Naszály hill get its name? 

According to legend, the first thing that fair-goers from the lowlands saw when they came near the town was this mountain, and they said that it was the Great Stalk. Whether the story has any basis in fact is unknown, but it is certain that the picturesque rocky crag, 6-8 km north of the city of Vác, is home to a number of caves. 

The most famous of these is the Násznép cave, which has been the subject of many adventurous legends. Hearing these stories is sure to put a cave tour on your Vac bucket list.

Legends of the Násznép cave

According to one legend, the daughter of a neighbouring lord of a castle fell in love with the son of a serf, and they secretly married. When they were on their way home after the wedding, the angry father chased the bride and groom, who fled to this cave. Another legend says that a wedding procession fled to this cave at the news of the sudden approach of Turkish troops and held the wedding here. Hence the name of the cave. 

Although none of the stories have been confirmed, the name may be explained by the fact that archaeological excavations have found a number of pots and pot fragments in the cave. From the extremely large number of pot fragments, it has been deduced that the cave was once the site of a great feast.
